Common Turkish Slang Words

Even though Turkish slang words should not be used very often in our daily lives, It is part of our lives and culture. However, sometimes they can really be helpful to describe better our feelings and thoughts about something or someone. They are used mostly between closed friends’ conversations.

Lets start to learn some common Turkish words and phrases.

ANASININ GÖZÜ

A cunning and cheating person. He is a person who can do anything for his own benefit.

• Görünüşüne aldanma. O çok anasının gözüdür.
• Don’t be deceived by its appearance. O çok anasının gözüdür.

BELEŞ

It is something that is obtained without giving any effort or spending any money.

• Bu beleş bir telefon.
• This is a beleş phone.

CİNS

Someone who is with strange behaviors and habits.

• Cins misin?

ÇAKAL

Someone who is  liar and deceitful. This person doesn’t follow the rules generally and find new ways to make their jobs faster or cheaper without giving importance other’s rights.

• O çok çakal biridir.

ENAYİ

Someone who can easily be deceived. For example, they can sell broken things to this person and they can buy things more expensive than normal. Below is a question that your friends can ask you after doing a non-profitable business with someone.

• Enayi misin?

FİLİNTA

Someone who is handsome and young. They are generally tall with wide shoulders and has a body in good shape.

• Filinta gibi.
• Someone who is like filinta.

FIRLAMA

Even though ” Fırlama” seems something bad for a person, Most of the people would like to have a personality like them.

They are very talkative , funny and have lots of friends around of them. Shortly, You don’t feel bored when you are with them. The problem is that they are unpredictable with their wishes and behaviors.

İNEK

Someone or a student who study more than any others. They can study all day without doing something social or they do not get bored studying.

• Ahmet inek bir öğrencidir.

KERİZ

Someone who is exploited by other people and they generally don’t aware of this.

• Keriz misin?

MAYASI BOZUK

Someone has a bad character and it is believed that this bad personality character is innate. You should be always be careful with these people, their bad character never turns into something good.

• Onun mayası bozuk.

YALAKA

These people are common almost in every work place. You will immediately know what it is meant. For their benefits, they always show extreme respect and interest to the people who have some power on their hands.

• These people called as “Yalaka kişiler”
• Yalakalık yapma – Do not make yalakalık
• Yalaka olma – Don’t be yalaka
• Yalakasın. – You are yalaka.
