Most common Turkish proverbs

In this article, I will share with you the most common Turkish proverbs. Although there are hundreds of proverbs in Turkish, only some of them are used in our daily spoken language.

You will find the translations and meanings for each Turkish proverb.

1) Sakla samanı gelir zamanı.

Word to word translation : Hide Hay, it’s time will come

Translation : Waste not want not

Meaning : Even the most worthless thing can be valuable when the time comes.

Turkish meaning : En değersiz şey bile zamanı geldiğinde değerli olabilir.

2) Gözden uzak olan gönülden de uzak olur.

3) Ağaç yaş iken eğilir.

Word to word translation : The tree bends when it is young.

English equivalent : you can’t teach an old dog new tricks

Meaning : Young people and children are much more easily trained than older people.

Turkish meaning : Gençler ve çocuklar yaşlı insanlardan çok daha kolay bir şekilde eğitilirler.

4) Meyve veren ağaç taşlanır.

Translation : the trees that bear fruit are stoned

Meaning : People who are exemplary and successful in their work are often envied and criticized.

Turkish meaning : İşlerinde örnek ve başarılı insanlar genellikle kıskanılır ve eleştiriler.

5) Damlaya damlaya göl olur.

Word to word Translation : Drop by drop, it becomes a lake.

Translation : many a little makes a miracle

Meaning : Little things are not unimportant. Little things are the beginning of big things.

Turkish meaning : Küçük şeyler önemsiz değildir. Küçük şeyler büyük şeylerin başlangıcıdır.

6) Tatlı dil yılanı deliğinden çıkarır.

Translation : Sweet words gets the snake out of its hole.

Meaning : It mentions that using and speaking nice and kind language can soften even bad or callous people.

Turkish meaning : Güzel ve nazik bir dil kullanmanın ve konuşmanın kötü yada duygusuz insanları bile yumuşatabileceğinden bahseder.

7) Acele işe şeytan karışır.

Translation : Haste makes waste.

Meaning : Before starting a job, it is expected that everything about that subject is planned and arranged. Otherwise, accidents or mishaps are inevitable.

Turkish meaning : Bir işe başlamadan önce o konuyla ilgili her şeyin planlanması ve düzenlenmesi beklenir. Aksi takdirde kazalar veya aksilikler kaçınılmazdır.

8) Hamama giren terler.

Word to word Translation : The person entering the bath sweats.

Translation : if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

Meaning : The things we want to achieve or the important things we want to do are always hard work. He says that nothing can be achieved without effort.

Turkish meaning : Başarmak istediğimiz şeyler veya yapmak istediğimiz önemli şeyler her zaman çok çalışmaktır. Emeksiz hiçbir şeyin başarılamayacağını söylüyor.

9) Büyük lokma ye büyük söz söyleme.

Word to word Translation : Eat big bite, don’t say big words.

Translation : never say never.

Meaning : Over time, people’s opinions may change, or you may have to do things you said you would never do. Because anything can happen in life.

Turkish meaning : Zamanla insanların fikirleri değişebilir veya asla dediğiniz şeyleri yapmak zorunda kalabilirsiniz. Çünkü hayatta her şey olabilir.

10) Denize düşen yılana sarılır.

Word to word Translation : Someone who falls into the sea hugs the snake.

Translation :  a drowning man will catch at a straw.

Meaning : When people are faced with a very difficult situation or problem, they may seek help in the wrong places or people. This can cause bigger problems.

Turkish meaning : İnsanlar çok zor bir durum veya sorun ile karşı karşıya kaldıklarında yanlış yerlerde veya insanlarda çare arayabilirler. Bu daha büyük sorunlara yol açabilir.
